Superbia

Here is a flip through of a book I just made. The best way to view it is on vimeo with full screen on and scaling off.

Sup·er·bi·a
Very good; first-rate; excellent. Of an extreme or excessive degree. An outlying part. A state of feeling or being. Delight or elation arising from some act, possession. Ostentatious display. Free from disturbance; disturbed.

  1. Cool, Matt! I really liked the way the images were laid out in different instances. When they were closer they definitely worked together, and when they were isolated the space was complementing. Was this for a class or project in specific?

  2. Nicely done Matt! I found it challenging and thought provoking. Very interesting use of negative space, especially with the entirely blank spreads. It kind of reminds me of some of Jason Fulford's books… and some of mine. I particularly liked the image at about a 1:16 of the power lines above a road. Did you shoot all of the images yourself or are some of them appropriated? I was also wondering about the 7 repeated images at 3:00, it seems to be going in a different conceptual direction then the rest of the book… what was your idea behind that spread?

  3. I recognized images from your past trips with your friends, other images made me want to say THAT IS SO MATT (atomic bomb cloud, parking lines, GOOGLE, etc.) Because of this I saw my friend and wanted to join his selected images on the pages that can still be filled.

BUT WE WANT TO KNOW WHAT THE HELL YOU WERE DOING! haha so tell us!

  4. Thanks for your comments.

Nathan: It was a project I worked in one of my classes this past quarter. We have 3 ten week sections instead of 2 semesters.

Noah: Jason Fulford's books are great, one of my professors knows him and the library here has a large collection of his books. He came and gave a presentation in the fall it was terrific and really fun. His books are certainly an influence. I agree with the repeating spread on page 7, it was thinking out repetition in constructed and especial suburban spaces. The books still does not seem to be completely resolved to me, but I am taking a bookbinding class this quarter so maybe i will revisit it in that class.

Micaela: I have been working on exploring constructed spaces and my surrounding environments. Through large constructed prints, like my previous surface work. Also through a video piece and then I made this book. The images were shot with my iphone and the books is meant to be less formal and more experimental than my other work. LETS HAVE COFFEE. I can't remember if i told you this or not, but the coffee shop on campus has Turkish coffee and the description is "strong as hell, black as death, sweet as love..."
