I'm going to Fotofest at the end of the month and I'm going to show a portfolio of 20 images from my Blue Water series. I wanted to select my strongest images while still showing the diversity and breadth of the series. How does everyone feel about this ordered selection?

Ouuu you are going to have people bowing down to you!
ReplyDeleteI don't remember the 6th image down of the bridge... love it... the fog is glorious.
As of your selection... perhaps one more image with people. How you can gain comfort with people off the street, set up your camera and have them looking so in place and with dignity. This part of your portfolio will surely need to be seen. I remember the image with the woman getting out of her car... tell me what you think.
xo
When I look at the order again, although I love the 6th image it does feel out of place since the other images are so consistent in lighting. Well there is a definite trend of overcast to a slight warm. I really love how all the portraits have a slight warm feeling. I'm falling in love with this series all over again!
ReplyDeleteI think it looks good Noah. I enjoy all the images. I think it is hard to get a sense of sequence on here.
ReplyDeleteHow will you be presenting them? What size prints? I assume the reviewers will flip through them?
Sorry I am a little exhausted right now. I just got back from SPE. I will try to think about it more and give you some better constructive feedback.
I agree that it is a bit hard to get a sense of the sequence here. That said, I also agree with Mickey that the 6th image feels a bit out of place with the rest of the images. There's no doubt that the image is phenomenal, but even on the first scan through the images it stuck out. I'm not sure if it is something that would easily be resolved by switching up the order or just omitting it.
ReplyDeleteI would also like to see another portrait in there if possible.
On a quick shuffle through, the order I'm kinda liking is 1, 2, 3, 10, 16, 17, 18, 15, 11, 8, 9, 4, 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20. Of course I don't have the luxury of laying that out quite so much to get a gander at how it would display, so forgive me if I am totally off base on that.
The 9th image is really doing it for me, as are 17 and 20.
Yeah I agree, I think that the sequencing is a bit hard to get sense of in this column type format. As far as the one of the bridge in the fog goes, I don't think it really stands out as too different since images 2 and 12 are also at dusk.
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna do 15x12" prints with probably a 2.5" paper border all around. I'm gonna build a custom portfolio case to fit them so that reviews can just flip through them or slide them from one side of the case to the other. Right now I had them sequences so that none of the reoccurring visual content or themes (water, signage, green foliage, blue sky, overcast lighting, architecture, etc.) get too clumped together, and so that there is a kind rhythm and flow to the images.
Also I had considered adding one more portrait but I'm not sure which one to use. If I do add another one, do you think that 21 images in a portfolio is too much or do I need to take something out in it's place?
